Favourites of Spellbound: Theo’s Black Forest Cupcakes

Well the time has come friends, the end of our Favourites of Spellbound series is coming to an end, but you won’t be shedding any tears over these amazing cupcakes! These are, without a doubt Theo’s favourite goodie, and not just because they have been used to tame a wild creature or two, or because they are so handy as a go-to snack whilst patrolling the woods. If you’re like Theo, it can be a bit tricky sometimes to be around people, but going over to a friend’s house with a plate of these delectable treats is by far the best way to get things off on the best foot. As always, the recipe can be found below.

Theo’s Black Forest Cupcakes

Equipment

  • cupcake pan

  • cupcake liners

  • hand mixer

Ingredients

  • 156g (1 ¼) cup cake flour, substitute all purpose flour

  • 43g (½ cup) unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 2 tsp espresso powder

  • 1 ¾ tsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp kosher salt

  • 114g (½ cup) unsalted butter, melted

  • 200 g (1 cup) granulated sugar

  • 2 large eggs, room temperature

  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

  • 100g (½ cup) whole milk

  • 275g (2 cups) cherries, fresh or frozen

  • 50g (¼ cup) granulated sugar

  • 2 tbsp cornstarch

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 tbsp Kirsch , or other cherry liquor

  • 475g (2 cups) heavy whipping cream, cold

  • 60g (½ cup) powdered sugar

  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

  • 2 tsp flavorless powdered gelatin

  • 2 tbsp water

  • fresh cherries

  • dark chocolate shavings

Directions

In a large pot over medium heat, combine the cherries, sugar, and cornstarch. Cook, stirring frequently, until the cherries begin to break down and the filling starts to simmer and thicken, about 15-20 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla and Kirsch. Allow to cool completely before filling the cupcakes. This can be made up to 3 days in advance and stored in an airtight container in the fridge

Preheat the oven to 175°C(350°F) and line a 12 cup pan with cupcake liners. Whisk the flour, cocoa powder, espresso powder, baking powder, and salt together in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk the melted butter, eggs, sugar, and vanilla together until combined. Stir in about half of the flour mixture. Then stir in the milk and the remaining flour mixture and mix until fully combined. Pour about ¼ cup of batter into each cupcake liner (they should be about halfway full). Bake at for 18-22 minutes or until a cake tester comes out clean. Remove from pan and let cool on wire rack. Let cupcakes cool completely before frosting.

Add the water to a microwave safe bowl and sprinkle the unflavoured gelatin on top. Allow to sit for a few minutes. Transfer the gelatin mixture to the microwave and microwave for 5-10 seconds, until the gelatin is fully dissolved. Stir the mixture, then set aside to cool slightly. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, or in a large mixing bowl using a hand mixer, combine the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Whip the mixture until it starts to thicken and soft peaks form, then turn the mixer to low speed. Slowly pour in the gelatin mixture and mix on low until well combined. Increase the mixer to medium speed and continue mixing until stiff peaks form. Note: if the gelatin mixture thickens up too much before you add it to the whipped cream, just pop it back in the microwave for 3-5 seconds. It should be a pour-able consistency.

Once the cupcakes are fully cooled, use a cupcake corer to remove the center of each cupcake and discard (and by discard I mean snack on while you finish making the cupcakes). Spoon the cooled cherry filling into each cupcake. Transfer the stabilized whipped cream into a piping bag fitted with a 1A tip and pipe swirls on each cupcake.

Top with a dark chocolate shavings and a fresh cherry.

International Women’s Day

Happy International Women’s Day! As part the celebrations, we have been selected to be showcased as part of Women’s Day event on Steam with a sneak-peak of Spellbound: The Magic Within livestream running on our Steam page all this week. If you weren’t able to play Spellbound: TMW at EGX last year or at the London Games demo day, this is your chance to see some gameplay footage of Spellbound, and get to know the Spellbound gang a bit more! The link for this can be found here.

Live streaming for the Women’s Day Event over on Steam from the 7th-11th March 2022

International Women’s Day is an amazing opportunity to celebrate all that women have achieved, and as a female-founded company, we feel it is vital to highlight how far the gaming industry has come, as well as the the work still needed to create a better future for all who work in the industry.

The first area worth looking at is the number of women working within the UK gaming industry.

According to the UK Games Industry Census 2020, 28% of people working in the UK Games industry identify as female.

Image from UK Games Industry Census 2020 (https://ukie.org.uk/UK-games-industry-census-2020https://ukie.org.uk/UK-games-industry-census-2020)

Image from UK Games Industry Census 2020 (https://ukie.org.uk/UK-games-industry-census-2020https://ukie.org.uk/UK-games-industry-census-2020)

This number is significantly under the national average of those in work, but is higher than the general IT/software sector. It’s also a significant increase from the 2016 figure of 19%, so progress is absolutely being made.

The other area to look at is the number of women working within gaming in an executive role.

According to the 2020 Gender Balance Score Card (done in conjunction with the organisation Women in Games) which looked at the executives of the top 14 Global Gaming Companies, only 16% of executives were women.

Image from 20 First’s 2020 Gender Balance Scorecard (https://20-first.com/)

Additionally, five of these companies had zero women in Executive Team, and only one had a female CEO.

Image from 20 First’s 2020 Gender Balance Scorecard (https://20-first.com/)

The take-away from all of this is that yes, things are absolutely getting better, but the work is far from being over. If you’re interested in this topic and in possibly getting involved, we highly recommend you check out Women In Games. It is a non-profit aimed at enhancing the opportunities for women in games and esports, and framing it “as a national, international and strategic priority, a business case for stronger teams, better insights, innovative new products”. Another important way you can help is by supporting female-founded companies and games, and joining their communities like ours on Discord!

Thanks so much for reading, and remember to stay Wyrd!

Favourites of Spellbound: Ari’s Earl Grey Cake

It’s a new month, which means we are one step closer to warmer weather, and one step closer to the release of Spellbound: TMW! For now, please enjoy the next instalment in the “Favourites of Spellbound” series. Ari’s Earl Grey Cake! This cake is THE perfect accompaniment to any of your favourite café beverages, hot or cold.

Ari has made their cake with blueberries, but it can be made with any berry of your choice!

As always, here is the recipe if you’d like to try making it at home. And be sure to let us know if you try making Ari’s cake on our Discord, Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook. Happy baking everyone, and stay Wyrd!

Ari’s Earl Grey Cake

Ingredients

  • 150ml whole milk

  • 4 Earl Grey tea bags

  • 350g unsalted butter, softened

  • 350g caster sugar

  • 6 large eggs

  • 350g self raising flour

  • 1tsp baking powder

  • 1tsp vanilla extract

  • 250g unsalted butter

  • 450g icing sugar

  • 1tsp vanilla extract

  • 2–4tbsp milk

  • blueberry jam

  • fresh blueberries to decorate

Directions

Pour the 150ml of milk into a small saucepan and heat over a medium heat. Allow to bubble but remove just before it comes to the boil. Add the 4 tea bags, give it a stir and leave until completely cool. Once cooled down, remove the bags, give them a good squeeze and discard. Set the infused milk aside while you make the cake.

Preheat the oven to 170C(340F) and line 3 9″ cake tins with baking paper. Place the butter and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer and mix on a medium speed for 5 minutes until the butter is light and creamy. Sift the flour and baking powder together and set aside. Turn the mixer down to a low speed and crack the eggs in one at a time. Once the eggs are fully Incorporated add half of the flour and mix to combine, add the infused milk and vanilla extract followed by the remaining flour and mix again.

Pour the batter into the prepared baking tins and bake for 35 minutes until golden brown and the cake springs back when you touch it. Allow to cool in the pans for 20 minutes before removing them and placing on a baking rack to finish cooling.

To make the frosting first mix the butter in the bowl of an electric mixer until pale and soft. Add the icing sugar, vanilla and 2tbsp of the milk. Turn the mixer on low and gradually increase the speed. Whip for 5 minutes, if the frosting looks too stiff add the rest of your milk. You may find you need a little more, just go steady until you reach a nice piping consistency.

Spread the frosting on top of your first cake followed by a good splodge of blueberry jam, top with the next cake and repeat. Pop your top layer on and spread the remaining frosting on top, scatter with fresh blueberries. If you have a piping bag and nozzle feel free to pipe your butter cream on for a more polished look.

February Development Update

And we’re back with another development update! Despite being the shortest month of the year, February has been a busy month at Wyrdren. At the beginning of the month we added another member to the team, Brett, who is a programmer. Brett has been so amazing so far and has been invaluable in helping to improve and fine-tune Spellbound: TMW. Some of the things he’s been working on include Universal Pipeline Rendering (UPR), which means we can now edit the lighting inside of the scene making it look like morning, noon, and night, etc. This gives the scenes within the game a more dynamic feeling, and overall makes the scene “feel” more alive.

Here are some examples of UPR in action:

This lighting also works well because it doesn’t take a huge amount of power to render it . This allows us to move the game to console eventually as it doesn’t need a big memory or graphics card.

We’re also now working on an overhaul of the character creator, which will include the addition of more options for you to choose from, as well as a better user experience overall.

Our community means the world to us, and we are always looking for ways to create a better user experience for all of you. We have taken on a lot of the suggestions you all have made, and are working very hard to implement as many of them as we can. We want the game to be as interesting and fun as we can make it, that way can spend as much time as you want doing the things you like most, especially if you’re like us and spend half an hour in the character creator alone. It’s important to know that with our development, it’s not that we’re taking anything away, it’s that we’re trying to make it a better experience overall.

As we’ve spoken about before, up until recently, Spellbound was a solo development project. Now that we’re taking on more team members it means we can add & adjust features as we’d like because we now wonderfully have the means to do so!

We hope this update has been helpful for you, if you do have any questions please feel free to ask us anything. Wyrdren has its own Discord server where you can meet other Wyrdren fans and ask any of the questions you may have, so do be sure to check it out.

We’re so excited to show you what’s coming next, be sure to check in with us often as we post regular updates. Remember to keep playing, and stay Wyrd!

Favourites of Spellbound: Melody’s Tea Time Menu

The next instalment in our “Favourites of Spellbound” series is Melody’s tea time menu! Melody is a firm believer that there is nothing in this world that can’t be solved over a plate of delectable homemade treats, and you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone in Witcherleigh who disagrees.

Melody’s tea time menu consists of (all homemade of course) petit fours, cucumber and ham finger sandwiches, blueberry scones, and an assortment of jams, creams, and curds.

If you’d like to try making Melody’s treats, we’ve included the recipes below.

Petit Fours

Ingredients:

  • 1 jar homemade or store-bought lemon curd

  • 1 jar of your favourite homemade or store-bought fruit jam

  • ⅔ (150g) cup unsalted butter softened

  • 4 (113g)oz cream cheese softened

  • 1 ½ cups(300g) granulated sugar

  • 4 large eggs room temperature preferred

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 2 cups(250g) all purpose flour

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • ¼ cup(60ml) whole milk

  • 15 Tablespoons(225g) unsalted butter cut into pieces

  • 1 ½ Tablespoons heavy cream

  • 6(90g) Tablespoons light corn syrup

  • ⅛ heaping teaspoon salt

  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 4 ¾(600g)cup powdered sugar

  • Gel food colouring optional, only if desired

Directions

Preheat oven to 175C (350F) and grease and flour or spray with baking spray two 10x15” jelly roll pans (if you only have one, you can bake one cake at a time, just let the pan cool completely before washing it and re-using).

Combine butter, cream cheese, and sugar in a large bowl and beat with an electric mixer until creamy, well-combined and lightened in colour.

Add eggs, one at a time, stirring well after each addition (about 10 seconds on medium speed after each egg).

Stir in vanilla extract. Mixture should be very smooth, light, and creamy when finished mixing. Be sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl periodically to make sure all ingredients are well-combined.

In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.

With mixer on low-speed, alternate adding flour and milk to the butter mixture until ingredients are completely combined (scrape sides and bottom of the bowl as needed).

Divide batter evenly into prepared jelly roll pans and spread so the layers are even and smooth. Transfer to 175C(350F) oven to bake for 12-13 minutes (if baking one layer at a time) or 15 minutes (if baking both at the same time) or until baked through and cake springs back when lightly touched. Cake may still appear very pale even when baked completely through, don’t over-bake or it will be dry.

Allow cakes to cool completely then, working with one cake at a time, cut first cake into three even pieces, each just under 5” wide.

Transfer each piece to a clean surface. Evenly spread lemon curd or filling of choice on one third and raspberry cake filling or filling of choice on another. Leave the last third plain, this will be your top layer, petit four layers with filling

Stack the cake thirds with the plain layer on top and gently press down all over wit your palms to gently squeeze out any excess filling. Using a 1 ½” round or square cookie cutter (or use a sharp knife to cut into even 1 ½” squares) firmly press down to cut out square and transfer to a wax paper lined baking sheet. Repeat until you have cut out as many cakes as possible. Set aside and repeat with remaining cake.

Cover petit four cakes with plastic wrap and place in the freezer while you prepare icing.

For the Icing

Heat about 2-3” of water over medium-low heat in a medium-sized saucepan and bring to a simmer. In a medium or large heat-proof bowl that fits snuggly over your saucepan without touching the water, combine butter, heavy cream and light corn syrup. Stir frequently over simmering water until melted.

Add vanilla extract and gradually add sugar until combined and mixture is smooth. Test the consistency of the icing by lifting your spoon out of it. If it drizzles smoothly back into the bowl and holds its shape for a second before dissolving into the bowl of icing, it’s perfect. If it’s too stiff, add a splash more cream as needed. Stir in any food colouring here, if desired.

Remove petit fours from the freezer and place on on a large fork over the bowl of icing (so that any drips fall back in the bowl to be re-used). Using a spoon, spoon icing over the petit four until it is completely covered. Use your first petit four as a gauge for testing how smoothly the icing covers and adjust as needed. Return cakes to the baking sheet, and repeat with remaining cakes until all are covered.

Allow to cool completely for icing to harden before enjoying (this can be done at room temperature or in the refrigerator). If desired, after cooling completely decorate with royal icing.

Blueberry Scones

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour (spoon & levelled), plus more for hands and work surface

  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar

  • 2 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick; 115g) unsalted butter, frozen

  • 1/2 cup (120ml) heavy cream (plus 2 Tbsp for brushing)

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

  • 1 heaping cup (180g) fresh or frozen blueberries (do not thaw)

Directions

Whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt together in a large bowl. Grate the frozen butter using a box grater. Add it to the flour mixture and combine with a pastry cutter, two forks, or your fingers until the mixture comes together in pea-sized crumbs. See video above for a closer look at the texture. Place in the refrigerator or freezer as you mix the wet ingredients together.

Whisk 1/2 cup heavy cream, the egg, and vanilla extract together in a small bowl. Drizzle over the flour mixture, add the blueberries, then mix together until everything appears moistened.

Pour onto the counter and, with floured hands, work dough into a ball as best you can. Dough will be sticky. If it’s too sticky, add a little more flour. If it seems too dry, add 1-2 more Tablespoons heavy cream. Press into an 8-inch disc and, with a sharp knife or bench scraper, cut into 8 wedges.

Brush scones with remaining heavy cream and for extra crunch, sprinkle with coarse sugar. (You can do this before or after refrigerating in the next step.)

Place scones on a plate or lined baking sheet (if your fridge has space!) and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, preheat oven to205°C (400°F) .

Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or silicone baking mat. After refrigerating, arrange scones 2-3 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet(s).

Bake for 22-25 minutes or until golden brown around the edges and lightly browned on top.

(Adapted from Sally’s Baking Addiction, My Favourite Blueberry Scones)

For the sandwiches, Melody suggests making two of your favourite kinds of sandwiches, and then cut them into triangles. She wishes to stress how important it is that they be cut into triangles, as it is clearly the superior sandwich shape.

Let us know if you try your hand at Melody’s Tea Time menu either with a photo or by tagging us on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook. Happy making and as always, remember to stay Wyrd!

Wyrdren goes to PG Connects

One of the joys of working in the Gaming industry is the experience of comradery, new ideas, and watching game developers thrive - there is one place where this is the most evident and that is at Gaming Conventions. Meeting people share your passions is a singular event unto itself, and is one that all of us at Wyrdren have greatly missed.

Since the shenaniganry of the past two years has started to subside, we were thrilled at being able to attend our first convention of the year, PG Connects (PGC). PGC is a mobile games conference that gives people from all backgrounds (publishers, press, investors, etc.) a place to meet and connect. This year, PGC opened its doors to PC developers as well, which included access to the Big Indie Pitch. The Big Indie Pitch is an indie developer competition where developers perform a five minute pitch of their game to 10 judges of various industry professionals, sort of like speed dating for developers. At the end, all competitors receive feedback about their game, and one lucky team will be named the winner of the Pitch and will receive coverage on PCGamesInsider.biz. Suffice it to say, we at Wyrdren were thrilled at the prospect of this opportunity, and were quite eager to attend and be part of the Pitch.

With hours of prep completed and our pitch deck ready to go, Wyrdren headed off to London to see what the day had in store.

The faces of two highly caffeinated people very ready for the day. (Left Sally Sheppard: Director, Right Annie Durwood: Relationships & Community Manager)

There are many lessons to be learned in the process of making and performing a pitch. Whilst Wyrdren has made and performed multiple pitches in the past, it is still very important to customise and adapt to whatever your current pitch may need. In the case of the Big Indie Pitch, adaptability was the most important factor. Initially, we had prepared a pitch that highlighted both Wyrdren and Spellbound: the Magic Within. Once we were at the pitch, we then learned that the judges really only wanted to know about the game, so we quickly amended our materials to solely focus on the game rather than Wyrdren as a company.

Taken right after our round at The Big Indie Pitch, the adrenaline wearing off.

As we began meeting with the judges, we started off by reading from our rigid set of notes, but over time adapted what we said to be more off the cuff. We noticed very quickly that the pitch was getting better with each set of judges, and it was allowing us to customise the pitch to fit the judges in a more organic way. By the end of it, we had performed five different pitches, with each one conveying different sets of information each iteration improving .

The Awards Show

At the end of the day, whilst we didn’t win the Big Indie Pitch, the day as a whole was a huge win. The opportunity to meet other industry professionals, and receive feedback on both Wyrdren and Spellbound: TMW is priceless. It’s important to not expect perfection, because not only does it not exist, but you run the risk that you miss those opportunities for growth. We are always eager to learn and be better, which is part of the reason we so enthusiastically welcome and encourage feedback.

Conventions as a whole can be invaluable to developers, and PG Connects was a primary example of this. It was an amazing experience, and we were overjoyed to be able to attend and be apart of the Big Indie Pitch. We look forward to going again next year, with a new pitch in hand.

Thanks for reading, and remember to stay Wyrd!

Favourites of Spellbound: Fern’s Comfort Cookies

The first in our “Favorites of Spellbound” series, Fern’s Comfort Cookies! These ooey-gooey cookies are great for any occasion, whether you’re welcoming a new neighbor to town, running errands, or need to fend off a wild jackalope. Fern is convinced that they are made of magic, because they can warm you up on the coldest and dreariest of days. Just be careful, as these gooey treats can leave quite the mark on a book page (there was an incident with Melody and chocolate fingerprints that Fern would rather not speak about).

If you’d like to try these cookies yourself, here’s the recipe! Tag us if you decide to have a go at making them. Happy baking and remember to stay Wyrd!

Fern’s Comfort Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1½ cups (200 g) all-purpose flour (spooning into measuring cups, then levelling)

  • 1¼ tsp. (4 g) Diamond Crystal or ¾ tsp. (4 g) Morton kosher salt

  • ¾ tsp. (4 g) baking soda

  • ¾ cup (1½ sticks; 169 g) unsalted butter, divided

  • 1 cup (200 g) (packed) dark brown sugar

  • ¼ cup (50 g) granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 2 large egg yolks

  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract

  • 6 oz. (170 g) bittersweet chocolate (60%–70% cacao), coarsely chopped, or semisweet chocolate chips

Directions

Place racks in upper and lower thirds of oven; preheat to 190°C (375F). Whisk flour, salt, and baking soda in a small bowl; set aside.

Cook ½ cup (1 stick; 113 g) butter in a large saucepan over medium heat, swirling often and scraping bottom of pan with a heatproof rubber spatula, until butter foams, then browns, about 4 minutes. Transfer butter to a large heatproof bowl and let cool 1 minute. Cut remaining ¼ cup (½ stick; 56 g) butter into small pieces and add to brown butter (it should start to melt but not foam and sizzle, so test with one piece before adding the rest).

Using a 1½-oz. scoop (3 Tbsp.), portion out 16 balls of dough and divide between 2 parchment-lined rimmed baking sheets. Bake cookies, rotating sheets if cookies are browning very unevenly (otherwise, just leave them alone), until deep golden brown and firm around the edges, 8–10 minutes. Let cool on baking sheets.

Cookies can be made 3 days ahead. Store airtight at room temperature.

Development Update: Release Schedule

With the New Year now under way, we have taken this time to evaluate things with both Wyrdren and Spellbound: The Magic Within, and have come to the decision that we are pushing the release of Spellbound by approximately three months. This was not an easy decision to come to, but we felt it was the best one to make based on a number of factors.

At Wyrdren, the player is our #1 priority, and we are always striving to make our games the best they can possibly be. We believe it is always worth taking opportunities that allow us to polish things to a higher standard, so that you, the player, are getting the best possible experience.

In January 2022 it was announced we had been selected to receive some Grant Funding from the UK Games Fund. Funding provides us the opportunity to expand our team which means we can bring talented individuals on board to help elevate the game. The original release date of Spellbound: TMW was initially based on Wyrdren being a one-person team, which means it was based on what one person’s skills were able to produce. As we’ve received additional funding, we have been able to grow and add people to our team this. This means we now have access to new skills, and can utilise them to further enhance and polish Spellbound: The Magic Within.

We believe it is always worth taking the extra time to introduce the team to the way we produce games here at Wyrdren. We also care about the well-being of our team, and are very much an anti-crunch company. We see crunch as being a very unsustainable method of production, particularly with our team being as small as it is, and ultimately feel it would not lead to a better product. By taking the extra three months this will allow our team to complete a the game to an excellent standard without the risk of burnout and we believe this is best for our team, our fans and the future of Wyrdren.

At Wyrdren, we are always aiming to be as transparent as we can with our community. We are always listening to what you say to us and so appreciate all the feedback and suggestions we’ve received from you via social media and those of you who have played the Demo at conventions during 2021. It is important to us that we are able to implement the suggestions you’ve made. The great new is that this includes your suggestions for updating our character creator, and continuing to make Spellbound: TMW a more inclusive and diverse game. With the addition of our Community Manager we have been listening to your feedback and preparing to implement it within the game. And now with an extra programmer now on board we are excited to announce we will be adding new features for accessibility and inclusion.

We always want to ensure we’re doing our best to create the best possible product for you, and for us that means taking these opportunities when they come up. We’re sorry for any disappointment this delay may cause, but we are confident that an the game will now provide an even more enhanced and immersive experience. As usual we will always include you in our conversation as much as we can.

In the mean time head over to our new Youtube channel and Discord server to help keep everyone updated and informed, so please keep reaching out! We want to hear from you!

Thanks again for continuing to support our journey, remember to keep playing, and stay Wyrd!
