INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2022
Happy International Women’s Day! As part of the celebrations, we have been selected to be showcased as part of the Women’s Day event on Steam with a sneak-peak of Spellbound: The Magic Within livestream running on our Steam page all this week. If you weren’t able to play Spellbound: TMW at EGX last year or at the London Games demo day, this is your chance to see some gameplay footage of Spellbound, and get to know the Spellbound gang a bit more! The link for this can be found here.
International Women’s Day is an amazing opportunity to celebrate all that women have achieved, and as a female-founded company, we feel it is vital to highlight how far the gaming industry has come, as well as the the work still needed to create a better future for all who work in the industry.
The first area worth looking at is the number of women working within the UK gaming industry.
According to the UK Games Industry Census 2020, 28% of people working in the UK Games industry identify as female.
This number is significantly under the national average of those in work, but is higher than the general IT/software sector. It’s also a significant increase from the 2016 figure of 19%, so progress is absolutely being made.
The other area to look at is the number of women working within gaming in an executive role.
According to the 2020 Gender Balance Score Card (done in conjunction with the organisation Women in Games) which looked at the executives of the top 14 Global Gaming Companies, only 16% of executives were women.
Additionally, five of these companies had zero women in Executive Team, and only one had a female CEO.
The take-away from all of this is that yes, things are absolutely getting better, but the work is far from being over. If you’re interested in this topic and in possibly getting involved, we highly recommend you check out Women In Games. It is a non-profit aimed at enhancing the opportunities for women in games and esports, and framing it “as a national, international and strategic priority, a business case for stronger teams, better insights, innovative new products”. Another important way you can help is by supporting female-founded companies and games, and joining their communities like ours on Discord!
Thanks so much for reading, and remember to stay Wyrd!
